Why Should You Allow Extra Room When Overtaking Another Motorcyclist On A Windy Day?

When driving in strong winds, be aware that the conditions could cause a motorcyclist or cyclist to swerve or wobble. Keep this in mind when following or overtaking a two-wheeled vehicle.

When a motorcyclist is overtaking you

It is our collective responsibility to share the road. But a little extra consideration goes a long way when it comes to motorcycles, particularly on windy days. Compared to drivers of cars or trucks, motorcyclists are far more susceptible to wind gusts.

Envision yourself speeding along the highway enjoying the sensation of the wind in your locks. A powerful gust suddenly blows in from the side. Your car leans slightly but it’s easy to straighten out. Now, imagine a motorcyclist feeling the same just right now. Their bike is shaky and unsteady.

This is the reason it’s important to give them more space when overtaking a motorcyclist on windy days. Below is a summary of the risks and tips for being a responsible safe driver:

1. There is no predictability to wind gusts. They can appear out of nowhere surprising a rider. A powerful wind can quickly shove a motorcycle sideways giving the rider no control.

2. Motorbikes weigh less. Motorcycles have a far lower center of gravity than cars and trucks. This increases their vulnerability to wind-borne debris.

3. A rider may have to put all of their effort into staying upright during a strong gust. Their capacity to steer and respond to abrupt changes in the road may be hampered as a result.

4. The rider of a motorcycle may have to swerve into another lane in order to maintain control if a gust strikes them out of the blue. This can cause an involvement with a car or truck.

So, why should you allow extra room while overtaking a motorcyclist on a windy day?

1. Provide extra room for bikers. This is the golden rule. The more space they have, the more time they have to react to wind gusts or other unforeseen circumstances.

2. Don’t follow too closely. In general it’s not a good idea but particularly not on a windy day. You need plenty of room to react safely in case the motorcyclist in front of you gets buffeted by a gust.

3. Recognize your environment. Keep an eye out for wind-related indicators such as waving flags or swaying trees. This can assist you in predicting gusts and modifying your driving style accordingly.

4. Avoid swarming motorcyclists at intersections. When they’re turning, don't cut them off. Give them plenty of room to move.

5. Retain a constant speed. A motorcyclist may become uncontrollably startled by abrupt braking or erratic lane changes so steer clear of these situations.

Remember, there are two sides to every road you share. You can contribute to motorcycle riders’ safety on windy days and every day by driving with consideration and awareness.

It’s a small deed of kindness that has a huge impact.
